The film is certified by the Indonesian Film Classification Board as having a rating of G, based on health risks attached to interracial relationships.[2] It was also released in Java, where the producer was Mochtar under the Java Industrial Film company, under the titlePendek-Pendek (lit. Speed-Speed).[2] Alang-Alang is also a source of inspiration for the plot Melawat ke Dukuh (lit. Look To the Land), a 2015 Malaysian film that was, according to The Star, \"a retelling of the earliest version of the Tarzan films\".[1]
In the next few years, The Teng Chun produced other films, including the 1940s films Tarzan pergi ke wong dengan kerudung (Tarzan leaves with tails) and Pendek-Pendek; both were remade with Mochtar as Tarzan starting in 1947.
Mochtar is today the most active of Indonesia's Tarzan actors. He is known primarily for his roles in the spandex Tarzan films. This helped to make him immensely popular in Indonesia. Despite the success of his career, he himself has stated that there are no plans to recut his films. He still appears in the massive ziplines that give the Indonesian Tarzans easily recognizable features.
Teng Chun's Alang-Alang (taken from the Indonesian word for blady grass) is a 1939 film from the Dutch East Indies. Starring Mohamad Mochtar and Hadidjah, it follows a young man in his quest to rescue his love from a bandit. Inspired by the Tarzan film series and shot in a period of one month with borrowed animals, the film was a commercial success and credited as a factor in the solidification of the Indies' film industry, as well as helping jump start the Malaysian and Singaporean ones. 7211a4ac4a
