The novel was screened as a short film by director Mani Ratnam in the Tamil movie Nanban (2010). Korkai was also adapted as a serial tele-series of Plus in Tamil titled Kathiriyam Three in 2011. The serial was directed by Sundar C. and featured Kofi Annan as the eponymous character. Several other teleserials based on Korkai have been telecast on Zee Tamizh, Star Vijay, Channel 9, Raj TV and Emirates TV. The novel is also telecast as Kathiriyam Three in Sri Lanka, Telugu and Malaysia.
The Author claimed he never intended Korkai to be a historic novel. The working title for the novel mentioned in the author's notes was Jal Nayakudu, a Kannada term for a person who resides in foreign place. He acknowledged deputy chief minister R. G. Siddaramaiah as a great inspiration for writing the book. Kannada journalist Anand Nivade who writes in Deccan Herald and senior journalist K. Bhupathi who writes in Deccan Chronicle praised the novel for Kannada readers. P. R. Nagendra, an academician whose research area is Early South Indian epigraphy, has written a short biography on the author, which has been published by the Karnataka Historical Society.
Among others, English language author, Michelle de Kretser, translated Korkai in 2008. In 2009, the Government of South Australia granted the author the title of a Member of the Order of Australia for her contributions to literature.
